About the Office

Nevada’s State Climatologist collects and interprets Nevada’s climate data and shares this analysis with interested stakeholders including the general public. The state climatologist operates from the University of Nevada, Reno and is a member of the American Association of State Climatologists.

Nevada’s State Climatologist is S. Jeffrey Underwood, assistant professor in the Department of Geography and the Atmospheric Sciences Graduate Program at the University of Nevada, Reno.

About Nevada’s State Climatologist

Dr. Underwood is an applied climatologist working in the areas of hydrometeorology, hazards, and urban environments. Much of his research is focused in regions of complex terrain and most research projects use remotely sensed data sets. Current projects include an analysis of extreme lee-side rainfall events in the Sierra Nevada, urban modified convection in arid regions, and intense rainfall and debris flow initiation in the western US and in northeastern Italy.
