Geography
The Department of Geography emphasizes the integration of human and physical geography and encourages the use of geospatial technologies (GIS, Remote Sensing, and Cartography). Our areas of specialization include the American West, biogeography, climatology, cultural historical geography, land use planning and water resources.
The department houses the office of the Nevada State Climatologist, the Geographic Alliance in Nevada, a geospatial and two physical geography laboratories, one for Palynology, the other for Dendrochronology. The Department has facilities for computer mapping and Geographic Information Systems.

Undergraduate Degrees
The Department of Geography offers two undergraduate degrees, a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science with a major in Geography. All students complete a core within Geography that provides a broad background in the discipline and prepares them for pursuing either degree. The Bachelor of Arts emphasizes proficiency in human geography and develops skills in a foreign language. The Bachelor of Science emphasizes proficiency in physical geography, geospatial methods, and human/environment interactions and develops skills in mathematics and statistics. All students are required to have a minor. Students are encouraged to develop with their advisors an individualized program of study within these degrees.

Master's and Doctoral Degrees
The Department offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Geography, a M.S. in Land Use Planning and Policy and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Geography.

Atmospheric Sciences
Bachelor of Science Atmospheric Sciences Major
The bachelor of science degree provides a foundation at the undergraduate level for study and career opportunities in the atmospheric sciences including atmospheric physics, atmospheric chemistry and meteorology. Atmospheric Sciences M.S. & Ph.D.
Atmospheric Sciences is a research-based interdisciplinary graduate program leading to a master of science (M.S.) or doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. The program is offered through the Department of Physics in partnership with the Desert Research Institute's (DRI) Division of Atmospheric Sciences. Students pursue research in atmospheric chemistry, cloud and aerosol physics, instrument development, atmospheric optics and acoustics, mesoscale meteorology, numerical modeling, fire climatology and other topics. Undergraduate Programs
Students at the Uiversity of Nevada, Reno have many options when it comes to majoring in academic subjects focusing on the environment. Graduate Programs
The diversity of graduate programs at UNR that offer environmentally-oriented degrees is extraordinary. Currently, the Graduate School offers over 20 degree programs leading to either M.S. and/or Ph.D. degrees with an emphasis on the environment. Most of these graduate programs are housed in academic departments; however, several are campus-wide interdisciplinary programs, involving faculty from across campus.
